A synthesizer is an electronic musical instrument that produces sounds that are generated by reading data contained in a memory.

The first synthesizers were analog, in them the sounds were generated by the direct manipulation of the electric current. Since that time there was a major evolution to current synthesizers that manipulate discrete data with computer technology.

The first synthesizer was developed by the RCA in 1957 occupied a huge space and it took many hours of work to produce the sounds. In 1964 appeared Moog, developed by Robert Moog and Herbert Deutsch, which was a modular synthesizer. In 1976 appears the Polymoog, able to generate chords. In 1977 appears Prophet 5, that already allowed to store and accede quickly to sounds created by the user.
