Although the traditional instrument consists of a series of hollow bulb-shaped blocks, the current temple blocks are rectangular in shape, with several blocks of different sizes to produce varied sounds. In western music, the use of this instrument is found in early jazz drummers. They are currently also used in modern orchestras.
