The name piano comes from the Italian pianoforte. Despite being in a dedicated section on this site, the piano is a stringed instrument struck by the Hornbostel-Sachs classification system.
Piano sound is produced by the vibration produced by the impact of hammers, which are felt-covered pieces of wood, on strings that are fastened and stretched in a wooden or metal frame. The hammers are activated via a keyboard.
There are two piano-like instruments, the clavichord and the harpsichord. The difference between these instruments is the sound production mechanism. While on the piano the hammer moves away from the string allowing it to vibrate, on the clavichord the hammer is in contact with the string, cutting off the sound. In the harpsichord, the rope is pinched.
