The Gewa Ivory Coast Caxixi is a traditional percussion instrument consisting of a closed wicker basket with a flat bottom filled with seeds or small particles. The bottom is traditionally made from a dried gourd. Sound is produced by shaking the instrument, with tonal variations depending on the angle: softer when striking the basket and louder, sharper when hitting the hard base. It is used across Africa and South America.
