The 24 preludes Op. 28 of Chop in marked a significant evolution in the long history of the genre. Chopin's predecessors composed many short piano pieces called preludes, usually as part of sets that go through the 24 tonalities. These preludes go through disguised cadenced formulas, even music that fills a page, rarely more than that.

In his public concerts, Chopin played a selection of his preludes, but he never touched them as a whole. However, it was not so much in his private recitals. Which was not surprising, because the execution of a set of preludes in public would be very strange at the time.
Edition Peters dates back to December 1, 1800, when the Vienna-educated composer and conductor Franz Anton Hoffmeister (1754–1812) partnered with organist Ambrosius Kühnel (c. 1770–1813) to establish a Bureau de Musique in Leipzig. Its activities included the sale of instruments - providing, among others, Goethe and Beethoven - and the publishing of books and sheet music.
The label is well known among classical music musicians for the variety and quality of its editions.
