It is a stringed musical instrument, very present in the Russian folk music, with a great popularity in the 20th century.
Balalaic's family includes five instruments, from the most acute to the most serious: piccolo balalaic (very rare), prima balalaic, second balalaic, alto balalaica, bass balalaic and contrabass balalaica. These different models with different voices made possible that many balalaika orchestras.
The prima balalaic prima is fingerpicked, the second and the alto are fingerpicked or flatpicked depending on the music to be played and bass balalaic and contrabass are always played with a leather palette.
The most popular tuning is 1st string G, 2nd E and 3rd D.
