The Brazilian cavaquinho results from the evolution of the Portuguese cavaquinho. It is slightly larger than the Portuguese cavaquinho, the resonance box being a little bigger and deeper. It is also distinguished from the Portuguese cavaquinho because the scale is not aligned with the soundboard and because the neck has more than 12 frets.

It is very used in traditional samba, in the crying and the congas of São Paulo.
