The oboe is a wind musical instrument. It is a double-vane instrument (like the bassoon) and among the instruments of an orchestra, it belongs to the wood family, such as flutes, clarinets and bassoons.
The oboe body is conical and usually built in dense wood (ebony), but can also be produced in ABS or plastic. The double vane is made of a small strip of special cane made of a special reed folded in two. A small metal tube called tudel is placed between the two sides of the folded strip, which is passed around the tube and firmly attached to it. The folded portion of the strip is cut and the two ends are abraded and scraped, thus constituting the double vane. The metal tube engages a cork base which is firmly secured to the upper end of the oboe.
In the oboe family there are several subfamilies: the soprano oboe in C, the oboé d'amore (a little sharper in A), the English corne (lower but still in F), as well as others that are quite rare, such as the oboe musette (or oboé piccolo, in F, usually), oboe baritone and bass oboe.
The oboes present in the site of the Salão Musical Hall are brand John Packer.
