The kalimba is a musical instrument of the lamelophone family and is in the category of fingered idiophones.
The earliest known lamplones appeared near Zimbabwe in sub-Saharan Africa and were made of raffia or bamboo palm wood around 1000 BC and spread through Africa. Each ethnic group that adopted these instruments developed them differently and gave it a different name. The instruments produced are differentiated by aspects such as the number of keys, whether they are built inside or outside a body, body material (coconut, gourd, raffia wood, etc.), whether or not it has holes and their location or whether they are used other materials connected to the keys to produce changes to the sound.
