Timbales are small height drums and with a single skin. They produce higher sounds and are narrower than the toms.
Timbales were invented as early as the twentieth century. The idea was to replace the eardrums that were used in Afro-Cuban orchestras by a more portable instrument.
They are usually mounted in pairs, where there is a difference of one inch in diameter between the two drums (diameters ranging from 12 to 16 inches) and are played standing up. Depending on the sound to be produced, the percussionist will play them with drumsticks or drumsticks beating the skin, producing rhythms or playing on the rim. You can also touch them with your hands.
Timbalitos, which are smaller timbales, 6, 8 or 10 inches in diameter, have recently been produced.
