It is an instrument of recent invention, it was invented in the 70s by American saxophonist Brian Wittman, who lived in Hawaii. The first xaphoons were made of bamboo and were intended for children who wanted to learn saxophone, but these instruments are currently made of ABS plastic and manufactured in series. The sound of the xaphoon is between the clarinet and the saxophone. The reed employed is usually the same as the tenor saxophone.
The instrument's typing system is unique to this instrument and is different from that used in flutes and clarinets, but is easy to learn.
