The traditional Portuguese banjo is a stringed instrument that has a metallic body, of a circular shape and the sound box covered by a natural or synthetic skin. It has a long thin arm and metal ropes.
The banjos used in Portuguese popular music and contemplated in this section are the banjo mandolin (or banjolim), the banjo bandola (banjola), the banjo trumpet and the banjo viola.
These instruments are played like the mandolin, the bandola or the viola, but its metallic body projects a volume of sound quite superior.
Other banjo types, such as the tenor banjo (used in Dixieland jazz bands) and the American 5-string banjo (see Banjos Americanos), should be noted.
