The cajón is a percussion instrument originating in colonial Peru. The word is the augmentative grade of caja, since African slaves in Peru used wooden boxes and drawers to play their rhythms. The instrument has evolved to the present day and is considered a cultural heritage of Peru.
It is constructed of wood and the current models have ropes placed underneath the top, which allows the snare effect.
The brands of cajóns presented are Honsuy, LP, Sonor and Pepote.
Nowadays the cajón has expression in the music of different cultures and is used by percussionistas a little everywhere. It has, however, a very important expression in flamenco, due to its sonority that accompanies well the palms, the tap dance and the flamenco guitars, had as great impeller Paco de Lucia. It has become so assiduous a presence in flamenco that some people think that it is an instrument of Spanish origin.
